DescriptionThallus: placodioid, monophyllus, up to 2 cm in diam.; upper surface: white, yellow or orange, dense, covered with whitish pruina, with bullate schizidia; upper cortex: paraplectenchymatous, 25-50 µm thick, including a up to 40 µm thick epinecral layer; medulla: white, 40-150 µm thick; algal layer: indistinct, 40-125 µm thick, with scattered algae cells dispersed through the whole medulla or very rarely continous; lower cortex: absent; lower surface: gelatinized, compressed hyhae; Apothecia: common, sessile, up to 1.25 mm diam.; disc: flat, becoming concave in old ones; margin: smooth, brighter than disc; asci: clavate, 8-spored; ascospores: hyaline, simple, ellipsoid or dumb-bell shaped, 11-16 x 4-5.2 µm; Pycnidia: not found; Secondary metabolites: anthraquinone pigments.; Substrate and ecology: on soil in arid areas; World distribution: rare, only previously known from dry areas in Spain; Sonoran distribution: very rare, so far only known from Baja California at about 2300 m.
