Range Description

This species was described from Caffraria, an inexact region often considered to be centred on the modern South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and the adjoining part of the Eastern Cape (Schoolmeesters 2011). It shows an essentially disjunct distribution on the mild, dry Highveld of South Africa and a small part of the high plateau of northern Namibia separated by the lower-lying deep sands of the southern Kalahari basin (Australian CSIRO 1970-1986, unpublished records) although a few specimens have been recorded in 2005/2006 in the north of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana (Tshikae unpublished data). Records to the southwest of the South African Highveld, especially those from the Upper Nama Karoo, should be treated with caution, as Scarabaeus ambiguus is difficult to separate from its extremely close arid-adapted relative Scarabaeus viator Péringuey 1901, with which its range may overlap.
