Description of Glaeseria

Locomotive form, thin and up to 70 µm in length with a tendency to temporarily branch. Pseudopodia frequently with a thin hyaline cap. No cytoplasmic crystals. Posterior contractile vacuole(s) and knob-like uroid sometimes with a few trailing filaments. Cysts of free-living species with smooth inner wall and sticky outer coating, uninucleate to trinucleate. Distinguish from Hartmannella on the basis of ultrastructural features: larger (30 nm) surface cup-like structures and no elongate mitochondria. Freshwater and the intestine of Testudo. Type species: G. mira (Glaser, 1912).
