Description of Cucurbitella

Shell ovoid, with distinct apertural collar, dark grey or opaque in colour, outline regular, body constructed of small to medium angular mineral grains. Organic cement seldom visible as surface structure. Apertural with three to 12 lobes, composed of small mineral grains. Internal aperture a circular or lobed opening in diaphragm on a level with main body wall. Nucleus: vesicular, cytoplasma of some species with zoochlorellae. Feeding: herbivore. Habitat: freshwater plants and sediments. Type species: Cucurbitella mespiliformis Penard, 1902.
