Description of Glugea

Species of Glugea develop in xenomas several millimetres in diameter in fish, the surface of the xenoma is overlain by fibroblasts which secrete collagen fibres which border and even penetrate the outer layers of the capsule; pinocytosis takes place at the cell surface; host cell nucleus is a highly branched structure, with numerous nucleoli; parasites are arranged with meronts towards the periphery, sporogonic stages tending towards the centre and spores in the centre; monomorphic, monokaryotic throughout life cycle; transmission is per os; meronts are unusual in having an electron dense surface coat and each being surrounded by a cisterna of host endoplasmic reticulum; rounded sporogonial plasmodia lose the surface coat of the meront as the endoplasmic reticulum cisterna disperses; spores, 4.5 x 2.5 µm are ellipsoid and uninucleate; polaroplast is lamellar with anterior densely-packed lamellae overlying more loosely packed membranes; polar tube is isofilar with about 14 coils in a single row; a conspicuous posterior vacuole, occupying up to half of the length of the spore; type species G. anomala in Gasterosteus aculeatus (Pisces, Gasterosteidae).
