Description of Acanthocystis

Centroheliozoa with a periplast with tangential plate-scales and external radial spicules. The radial spicules have a cylindrical shaft attached to the central part of a radially symmetric base-plate. Fourteen species, mostly freshwater, the type species A. turfacea Carter, 1863 has been recorded in marine, brackish and fresh waters.
