Description of Myxidium

Spores spindle-shaped, fusiform, straight, or slightly curved. Polar capsules usually pyriform. Polar capsules open at ends of spore. One binucleate sporoplasm in middle of spore. Valves often with striae. Usually coelozoic. Numerous species in marine and freshwater fishes, rarely in amphibia and reptiles. Type species Myxidium lieberkuehni.
