Characteristics

Thaumatomyrmex may belong within the Ponerini, but is characterized by the following apomorphies (Bolton 2003):
  • Mandible with a small number of extremely attenuated slender teeth, the apical tooth especially exaggerated
  • Median portion of clypeus extremely broad posteriorly
  • Antennal sockets and frontal lobes very widely separated, migrated outwards far away from cephalic midline
