Trees, sometimes with thorns, and with contact dermatitis-causing exudate. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate or 1-foliolate (rarely both on the same plant) or rarely 3-foliolate or paripinnate, petiolate; rhachis sometimes winged; leaflets opposite, entire. Flowers in terminal and/or axillary panicles, dioecious or monoecious. Male flowers: calyx 5-partite; petals 5-partite, green to white; disk 5-lobed; pistillode present; stamens 5. Female flowers: perianth and disk similar to male; staminodes present; carpels 3; styles absent or 3, lateral; stigmas 3 or solitary and sessile. Samara of exocarp and mesocarp expanded into a flattened lateral wing, green or red to brown; endocarp bony; 1-locular. [Description contributed by Dr Susan Pell]
