General Description

Callopora dumerilii is an encrusting bryozoan, found throughout the northern temperate zone. It is common from Norway to Madeira and into the Mediterranean.

Colonies form broad irregular sheets on stones, shells and kelp holdfasts. Callopora dumerilii is essentially a shallow water species ranging from the lower shore into the shallow subtidal water, although its depth limit is unknown. It has previously been reported from 300 m.

Distribution

Levende kolonies werden in 2005 aangetroffen op keien tussen de Hinderbanken. Leeft ook op kalkkokerwormen op boeien op zee (mond. med. F. Kerckhof). In Zeeland leeft deze soort bij het Goesse Sas en aan de noordzijde van de Zeelandbrug (Faasse & De Blauwe, 2004) en op de Klaverbank (pers. med. G. van Moorsel). In België op aangespoelde voorwerpen en riemwiervoetjes (De Blauwe, 2005).

Description

Vormt brede onregelmatige korsten. Zoïden ovaal, soms proximaal verbreed. Gescheiden door diepe groeven. Frontale verkalking klein, driehoekig, glad en glasachtig. 4 (zelden 6) stekels aan het distale einde van de zoïde; distaal paar klein, puntig en opgericht, meestal ontbrekend, vooral in de nabijheid van een broedkamer, proximaal paar altijd aanwezig, 1 of beide kunnen sterk verlengd en verdikt zijn, recht of gebogen, opstaand of gedrapeerd over het frontale oppervlak. Avicularia klein, geplaatst op de frontale verkalking, met puntig rostrum, vaak afwezig. Broedkamers bolvormig met fijn gekorreld oppervlak. Kolonies zonder broedkamer kunnen verward worden met Amphiblestrum auritum. Eieren en embryo’s oranje.
