Description of Bodo

Kinetoplastid flagellates, solitary, phagotrophic, with a single discrete, usually ellipsoidal eukinetoplast, the recurrent flagellum free or mainly free from the body, rostrum (preoral ridge) is not usually prominent and bacteria (more rarely larger particles) are ingested into a cytostome alongside the flagellar pocket; cysts common found, most about 5-10 µm long, anterior flagellum beats actively and the recurrent usually attached the cell to the substrate; type species, Bodo saltans in which rapid swimming takes place intermittently between bouts of jumping activity effected by rapid contraction of the posterior flagellum. The genus used to have many more species, but most have been assigned to Neobodo.
