Distribution

In 1904 en 1906 is een kolonie verzameld op de Vlaamse Banken. In 2004-2005 werden 4 kolonies verzameld bij de Westhinderbank. Alle kolonies waren overleden voor de vondst. Een kolonie op een aangespoeld voorwerp werd verzameld in september 2001 (De Blauwe, 2003a). In Nederland op Schouwen (Lacourt, 1949), zonder vermelding of het om aangespoeld materiaal gaat.

Hippoporina pertusa is essentially a warm temperate species that is distributed in the eastern Atlantic from southern and western Britain to the Mediterranean and West Africa. In Britain, it ranges north to the Hebrides and is not uncommon on the shell banks in the western Channel. It is known from the Isle of Man, Cornwall, south Devon, Guernsey and the coast of Antrim. Elsewhere, it has been recorded from the Gulf of Mexico, California and the Galapagos Islands

Physical Description

Morphology

Hippoporina pertusa is an encrusting bryozoan that develop broad spreading sheets which are reddish to orange. Autozooids are broad, rectangular or polygonal, flat or slightly convex. They are 0.6-0.7 by 0.35-0.5 mm and radiate from the centre.

Diagnostic Description

Description

Roodoranje korsten. Zoïden 0,6 tot 0,7 mm lang. Frontaal oppervlak plat of iets convex, fijn gekorreld en doorschijnend. Oudere zoïden worden ruwer, dicht bezet met poriën die elk in een ondiep putje liggen. Proximaal van de opening kan een kruisvormig bultje liggen. Opening breder dan lang. De scharnierpunten geven de indruk dat er proximaal een brede ondiepe sinus ligt. Geen stekels. Geen avicularia. Broedkamers regelmatig geperforeerd. Ancestrula frontaal met een ovaal membraan, omrand door ongeveer 7 stekels. Proximaal onder het membraan ligt een kalklaagje.
