Reasons: Widely distributed in southern Florida and the Keys, the Bahamas, the Antilles, from Mexico through Central America to Panama, Venezuela, and in Trinidad and Tobago. It typically occurs in (thorny) thickets or bushland, open pinelands, woodland or pastures, mesophytic (also deciduous) forest, rarely in (montane) rain forest, often over limestone as well as coral rock or sandy soil, at elevations up to 1200 (-1850) m.
