Hmmm. Well, this image is from a wild population in an area in which I'm not aware of Acer platinoides invading. Unfortunately, I did not photograph other features from the same tree as that particular image. However, if you examine http://bioimages.vanderbilt.edu/baskauf/10492 which is from another wild population about 20 km from this one, you can see that there is quite a bit of variability in the samara angle. I will have to go out to the site this spring and examine the extent of inter-individual variability.

This is most likely Acer platanoides (Norway maple). Red maple samaras have a smaller angle.
