Comments: Arid, leeward slopes and cliffs in shrubland vegetation. Shrubland communities include 'A'ali'i/Pili/Lovegrass (Dodonaea/Heteropogon/Eragrostis) Lowland Dry Mixed Shrub and Grassland, an open shrubland occurring on leeward trachyte-rich slopes, 'Aweoweo (Chenopodium) Subalpine Dry Shrubland, which is shrub-dominated with native trees scattered throughout, Ko'oko'olau (Bidens) Lowland Dry Shrubland, an open shrubland with a sparse cover of grasses where the species is codominant with Chenopodium oahuense on ridges and dissected slopes, and other dry, open to dense shrublands with Dodonaea viscosa, Myoporum sandwicensis, Sophora chrysophylla, Styphelia tameiameiae, and Chenopodium oahuense. Also present in native-dominated grassland communities, including Lovegrass/Mountain Pili (Eragrostis/Panicum) Montane Dry Grassland, which has a dense grass cover with scattered shrubs. In addition, occurs on slopes of cinder cones and in subalpine forest. 200-2200 m.

Scattered on arid, leeward slopes and cliffs in shrubland vegetation, 200-750 m, on Molokai, and West Maui, and common on slopes of cinder cones and in subalpine forest, 750-2,200 m, on the leeward sides of and in the saddle between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
