Solanum pubescens

It is a viscid shrub grows up to the height of 4-6 feet found at mid elvations(500-700m) especially in the deciduous forests of peninsular India. The leaves are un armed, flowers showy, axillary cymes. anthes yellow, fruits 6-7 mm dia, round, greenishm becomes reddish when ripes, several round seeds are present.

The immature fruits are bitter. It is collected in large quantities by the local people. semi crushed fruits are sun dried after removing the seeds. This dried fruits are used in food preparations. it is fried in oil and mixed with rice. A famous south indian sambar prepared mixing the fried fruits with tamarind fruit, chilly and other spices.Some people considering fruits of Solanum torvum as Solanum pubescens. S. torvum fruits will not bitter to taste, it is slightly larger and will not turn green when ripe. Solanum pubescens fruits are good for bowl related problems and arthritis.
