A glabrous annual with slender taproot and winged, erect stems, few to several from the base; branched above. Leaves are sinuate-pinnatilobed; leaf lobes are rounded and terminal lobes are aristate.  Inflorescence is an obconical branchlet with three leaf-like spikes, coriaceous with prominently-veined wings. Spikelets are 2–3 flowered. Flower calyx-lobes are broadly triangular, with five brownish bristles in the sinuses between the lobes; corolla is yellow and equals the calyx. Fruit is circumscissile; falling at maturity within the spike as a dispersal unit.
