Adansonia za is distributed along the western coastal area of Madagascar and is a Madagascar endemic. The range is from the southern tip of the island from a point west of Tolanaro northerly up to Analalava and Anjajavy. While the occurrence is typically in dry forests, the species is most typically found in near coastal areas set back at some distance from the actual shoreline of the Indian Ocean.
