Melophorus has the characteristics of the Formicini with the following exceptions (Bolton 2003):
  • 3-6 teeth on masticatory margin of mandible
  • Eyes often close to midlength
  • Reduced double row of setae on ventral metatibia
  • Asepalous proventriculus
