Range Description

This cactus grows in an area of about 300 km in a valley north of Vizarrn in Quertaro, Mexico, at elevations of 1,300 to 1,600 m asl. A subpopulation existed near Mesa de Len (Cadereyta, 1,800 m asl) but it has been almost completelyextirpatedin the last 20 years; a few conglomerates still exist where the soil is deep enough to allow the tuberous root to grow (E. Snchez pers. comm. 2010). This same area used to harbour the southernmost range of Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) in the northern hemisphere.
