Overview

Distribution

Range Description

The species is mainly distributed in Perú in Puno, specifically northeast of Macusani (Hunt et al. 2006), but it also occurs in Imata, Arequipa (Perú). A separate subpopulation has been reported from La Paz, Bolivia, but this information requires verification as it is very distant from Macusani and no coordinates are available. The species occurs from an altitude of 4,100 m to approximately 4,600 m asl.

Justification
As the existence of the Bolivian subpopulation is uncertain, this assessment only considers the Peruvian distribution. This species has a restricted range (Extent of Occurrence is estimated to be 2,200km2), and is threatened by dam construction related to mining activities. Because of this, the populations as well as the quality of its habitat are declining. This cactus is therefore classified as Vulnerable.

Threats

Major Threats
Collection does not occur due to its size. In Imata (Perú), the species has been affected by the construction of Pillones dam related to the mining industry; it was not flooded, but rather destroyed by the vehicular movement related to the construction. The same happened in Melgar (Puno).
