Overview

Distribution

Range Description

This species has a circumsubantarctic distribution in the Southern Ocean and adjacent oceans, occurring south of 35 ºS (Roper et al. 2010, Dunning and Wormuth 1998). It is common in the waters of the subtropical convergence zone (Dunning and Wormuth 1998).

Ecology

Habitat

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology
This species occurs in continental slope and oceanic waters between 0 and 1,200 m in depth (Roper et al. 2010). It has been taken close to the bottom, throughout the water column as well as near the surface at night (Dunning 1998). Little is known about its biology and ecology. In the Tasman Sea the sex ratio in catches is often close to parity (1:1), whereas further along the eastern coast of mainland Australia the ratio is typically biased in favour of females (7:1) (Dunning and Wormuth 1998).

Justification
Todarodes filippovae has been assessed as Least Concern. This oceanic species has a wide geographic distribution, making it less susceptible to human impact. It is occasionally targeted by fisheries in some regions of its range and is sometimes taken as by-catch. However, more research is still needed on its ecology and biology.

Threats

Major Threats
This species has occasionally been targeted by commercial fisheries (e.g. off Tasmania and the Falkland Islands) and has fishery potential (Roper et al. 1984). It is taken as bycatch to the jig fishery for Nototodarus sloani off New Zealand and Australia and by trawlers around most of its range (Roper et al. 2010).
