Description of Podophrya infusionumPeritrich ciliate, 30-90 microns long, usually 45-60 x 30-40 microns, three times as long as broad. Shape rather variable, usually slim to broadly pear-shaped, but well-fed cells may be nearly spherical. Contracted cells approximately spherical. Macronucleus 1/2 to 3/4 body length in body center. Contractile vacuole below the anterior end at the ventral wall of the buccal cavity. Often forms large aggregates giving the impression of being colonial.
