Robust shrubby perennial herb, up to 3 m, sometimes woody at the base. Leaves variable in shape and size, from subglabrous to densely hairy (depending on the subspecies). Flowers showy but short-lived, yellow. Sepals and petals 4; stamens 8, short. Capsule pale brown with 8 darker ribs. Subsp. sessiliflora is recognized by the long spreading hairs on the upper parts of the plant.Trusted
