Threats

Major Threats
This species is specifically targeted and a preferred species of collectors and dealers. In the past four to five years there appears to be a decline in availability in the areas that are readily dived (P. Bouchet pers. comm. 2011).

Conservation Actions

This species is restricted in its range and would benefit from further research into populations, distribution, habitat, level of off-take and threats (including the impact of fisheries) before any action plan can be formulated. There are no known conservation measures currently in place for this species.

There are plans in the next three years to establish the Marquesas as a marine protected area and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wikipedia

Conus gauguini

Conus gauguini, common name Gauguin's cone, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies.[2]

Like all species within the genus Conus, these snails are predatory and venomous. They are capable of "stinging" humans, therefore live ones should be handled carefully or not at all.
