Description of Oxytoxaceae

Peridiniphycid dinoflagellates, cells longer than broad, biconical, fusiform, or fusiform in dorso-ventral view and circular in cross-section; apex may be distinctly pointed or more rounded; cingulum varies in position from equatorial to closer to anterior apex; tabulation shows some gonyaulacalean, some peridinialean, and some features which do not relate to either order being or is derived from, the following pattern: 5-6 precingular plates, 5 postcingular plates, 5 climactal plates, and 1 antapical (fundital) plate. The first and last postcingular plates are in contact with each other.
