This species occurs in the temperate and boreal waters of the North Pacific, ranging from southern California northwards to the Gulf of Alaska and across to Honshu, Japan, in the northwest Pacific (Roper and Young 1999).

Habitat and Ecology
This oceanic species is known only from sporadic records in the north Pacific. It has planktonic paralarval young and appears to undergo ontogenetic downward migration (Roper and Young 1998). Off California, small individuals (20-30 mm in mantle length) are abundant in the upper 100 m in depth, intermediate sized individuals (30-50 mm in mantle length) at depths between 300 and 400 m, and large individuals (40-60 mm in mantle length) between 500 and 700 m in depth (Roper and Sweeney 1992). The late paralarval stage attains a mantle length of approximately 60 mm in mantle length (Roper and Young 1999). It is preyed upon by finfish such as blue sharks, Prionace glauca, and Pacific pomfret, Brama japonica.

It has therefore been assessed as Least Concern. More research is still needed on the distribution, ecology and biology of this species, as little is currently known about this species.
