Ann-Marie Anderson commented on "Southern hairy-nosed wombat":

Farmers may consider the wombat a pest , the problems arise after the warren has been disturbed and the animals displaced. it has been found that " just leaving them alone" reduces problems. it is also interesting to note the the warren system will move out from the oldest , that may contain areas were there are underground springs or seasonal ground water, to younger warren systems. In droughts when there is a high number of deaths in the wombat community , the oldest warren system will survive while the out laying ones will not. Often you will find a area where all the warren systems paths intersect , in this place you will find a large rock or fallen tree that is used as a scratching post of types , the wombat will dig under the fallen tree to make a area through which to crawl under. The back side is made up of a very thick cartilage plate, dingo and wild dog attach wounds have been noted on this area. the skeleton of dingo and fox have been found in warren systems , it is believed that the wombat lets the dog follow it into the barrow to a place were there is a narrow point , the wombat will lower its self , the dog climbs up onto the wombats back to grasp the neck , it is at this point the wombat rises its self up , the dog being caught between the roof and the wombat, is killed.
