Range Description

In the United States, this species occurs in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. NatureServe (2009) have classified it as Critically Imperilled in Kansas, Mississippi, and New York, and Possibly Extirpated in Louisiana.

This species is widely distributed and found throughout the Mississippi River system, with exception of extreme southern and western reaches. It also occurs in the St. Lawrence River basin and tributaries of Lakes Erie, Michigan, and Ontario and is considered stable throughout much of its range (Parmalee and Bogan 1998).

In Canada, this species occurs in Ontario and and is Critically Imperilled in Quebec (NatureServe 2009).
