Overview

Distribution

Range Description

The species is known only from a single specimen captured in April 1993 taken at 2,500 m on Mt. Kitanglad, Mindanao (Bukidnon province) (Musser and Carleton 2005). This species is currently known only from the Kitanglad Range (Rickart et al. 1998), though we suspect that it is more widespread in mossy forest on Mindanao.

Habitat and Ecology
The individual was found in a primary mossy forest with little disturbance (L. Heaney pers. comm.). Rickart et al. (1998) hypothesized that it is similar to Archboldomys luzonensis, which is diurnal and feeds on soft-bodied invertebrates. A semi-fossorial habit is inferred from a combination of external characters, including strong front feet with large claws, narrow head, tiny eyes, and dense, soft pelage (Rickart et al. 1998).

Justification
Listed as Data Deficient as it is known only from the type specimen. In the absence of species specific surveys, it is impossible to determine if the species is more widespread throughout central Mindanao. It is likely to be a high elevation species with few or no threats so it is unlikely that it to be threatened.
