Overview

Distribution

Range Description

This species was originally described from the Molluca Sea, off Indonesia. It has also been reported from the Philippines, although some reports may be misidentifications of its congener Abralia spaerki (see Young et al. 1998). It therefore appears to have a relatively restricted distribution in the central IndoWest Pacific.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is reported to grow to mantle lengths of up to 2 cm (Roper and Jereb 2010). Very little else is known about it. Some Abralia species inhabit the mesopelagic-boundary region (Young and Tsuchiya 2009): enoploteuthids generally occur in mid-depths in the ocean but occasionally they occur over the continental shelf (Norman 2003). They tend to undergo diel vertical migrations, rising into the upper water column at night to feed (Norman 2003). Females of enoploteuthids tend to spawn small eggs (0.9 and 1.5 mm in diameter depending on species; Young et al. 1992) individually into gelatinous strings (Norman 2003).

Justification
Very little is known about Abralia armata except that it is small, and occurs over a relatively restricted distribution in the IndoWest Pacific. We therefore consider it to be Data Deficient. Further research is recommended in order to better understand the precise distribution, population dynamics, life history and ecology, and the potential threat processes affecting this species.
