Alpheus rostratus is a snapping shrimp from the eastern Pacific, and belongs to the Diadema species group within the genus Synalpheus (Kim and Abele 1988). It is a free-living species and can be collected from rocks and coral, intertidal to 5.5. m depth. Snapping shrimp in the genus Alpheus have been a model system for studying molecular divergence in "transisthmian" taxa that diverged following the closure of the Isthmus of Panama (Knowlton et al. 1993).
