Brief Summary
Read full entryThe group name Equisetopsida is one of the higher taxon group names that has been used historically to refer to the "horsetails" (or "scouring rushes"). Recently, however, an influential paper (Chase and Reveal 2009) argued that to achieve consistency with respect to commonly recognized taxon ranks and the fact that the lineage including all land plants falls within one clade of green algae, the name Equisetopsida should include all land plants (embryophytes) and should be recognized at the rank of Class. Thus, the name Equisetopsida may refer to the horsetails (traditional use) OR to all land plants (recent use).
