Distribution

Range Description

This species is distributed in southern waters of the southern hemisphere, occurring in the South Atlantic (i.e. off Angola, Nambia and South Africa), southwest Indian Ocean, and eastern and western South Pacific (i.e. off South America, southern New Zealand and Tasmania), as well as the Mediterranean Sea (Dunning and Wormuth 1998).

Ecology

Habitat

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology
This species occurs over continental slopes in the southern waters of the southern hemisphere and the Mediterranean Sea. Little is known about its biology and ecology. Unvalidated statolith growth increment counts suggest this species has a single year life span, and back calculation of individuals hatching dates suggests that spawning occurs throughout the year in the Benguela upwelling system (Villanueva 1992). Mature and maturing females had a potential fecundity that ranged between 320,000 to 1,170,000, and mature oocyte length averaged between 1.0 and 1.2 mm in length (Laptikhovsky and Nigmatullin 1999). The sex ratio was in favour of females (3:1) in catches taken off Namibia (Dunning and Wormuth 1998).

Justification
Todarodes angolensis has been assessed as Least Concern. This oceanic species has a wide geographic distribution, making it less susceptible to human impact. Although it is not targeted by fisheries it is sometimes taken as by-catch. However, more research is still needed on its ecology and biology.
