Habitat and Ecology
This small oceanic species has planktonic paralarvae that occur in the upper water column, with adults descending to depths deeper than 2,000 m to mature (Voss et al. 1992). However, spawning may occur in shallow waters (Voss et al. 1992). Overall, little is known about the biology and ecology of this species.

Justification
Helicocranchia papillata is an oceanic species which inhabits deep-water, making it is less susceptible to human impact. It is also not targeted by fisheries and is unlikely to be in the future. However, it has been assessed as Data Deficient because it is not well delimited from other undescribed species in the genus Helicocranchia and therefore it is not even possible to elucidate its true distribution. More research is also still needed on its ecology and biology.

Conservation Actions
There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. Further research is recommended, specifically on the distribution, population abundance and ecology of this species, since very little is currently known.
