Brief Summary

The elephant hawk-moth is a common moth in the dunes. It feeds around sunset, preferring the nectar from the flowers of the honeysuckle. This flower gives off a stronger scent at night, specifically for attracting moths. The caterpillar is green or brown and lives mostly off of bedstraw. When threatened, it pulls its slender head and chest into the front section of the hind body, which then swells up and sways back and forth with its eye spots. This frightening impression scares away potential predators.
