Axis (genus)
Axis is a genus of deer from southern and eastern Asia. As presently defined by most authorities, four species are placed in the genus, but this may change (see Species).
Species
Following the third edition of Mammal Species of the World from 2005, four species are placed in Axis.[1] These four species are divided into two subgenera.[1]
- Genus Axis
- Subgenus Axis
- Axis axis – Chital, Spotted Deer or Axis Deer.
- Subgenus Hyelaphus
- Axis calamianensis – Calamian Deer.
- Axis kuhlii – Bawean Deer or Kuhl's Deer.
- Axis porcinus – Hog Deer.
- Subgenus Axis
Genetic evidence indicates that the two subgenera are not closely related, and the members of Hyelaphus should be moved to Cervus, leaving Axis as a genus that only contains the Chital, and perhaps the Barasinga and Schomburgk's Deer, which most authorities presently placed in Rucervus.[2][3]
