Brief Summary

An account of the interesting commensal relationship between Pilobolus and parasitic nematode lungworms in the genus Dictyocaulus, which hitch a ride with dispersing sporangia to improve the likelihood of ending up in a location where they are likely to be eaten by grazers, can be seen here.

You can see video of spore discharge (set to appropriately dramatic music) in this "fungus opera".

The dazzlingly innovative and dynamic Pilobolus Dance Theatre was named after this remarkable fungus.
