Inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs (Ref. 33204). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Its small and numerous pharyngeal teeth suggest a diet that consists mainly of filamentous algae (Ref. 33204).

Diagnostic Description

Colour dark brown to nearly black (in life with faint irregular longitudinal bluish lines following scale rows). Snout protruding. Body depth 1.9 to 2.1 times in SL. Lower teeth with 5 denticulations, the central one twice as large as adjacent ones (Ref 9808).

Zebrasoma rostratum

The longnose surgeonfish or black tang (Zebrasoma rostratum) is a marine reef tang in the fish family Acanthuridae. They may live at water depths of 10 - 61 m (33 - 200 ft) or more. The fish grow to a maximum length of 21 cm (8.3 in). Zebrasoma rostratum is found in the South Pacific off the coasts of the Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Line Islands, Tuamoto Islands to the Pitcairn Islands.
