Description of Blepharisma halophila

Heterotrich ciliate, 200-250 micrometres long. Body shape quite variable, often elongate, 6-7 times as long as it is broad. Colorless, to pale yellowish or red. Peristome 1/3 to as much as 1/2 the length of the body, with undulating membrane on the right side. Somatic ciliation thick, cilia somewhat longer at anterior pole. Single macronucleus, a long ellipsoid. Eats bacteria, Dunaliella, small diatoms. Found in hypersaline waters.
