This species is largely distributed in Central Africa and East Africa. It appears to range from northern Nigeria and Cameroon, into Chad, southern and central Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, and from here south into eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, Kenya and Tanzania (including the island of Zanzibar), being recorded as far south as Malawi, northern Mozambique and northern Zambia. There is one isolated record from coastal Congo, although the presence of the species in this country, and also in Chad and Nigeria, needs to be confirmed. It has been recorded from lowland sites up to elevations of over 2,000 m asl (2,200 asl at Gondar, Ethiopia).
