    The National Salmonella Reference Laboratory at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has determined that the new species of Salmonella subterranea reported by Shebolina et.al (4) is not likely a Salmonella species, demonstrated by molecular and phylogenetic evaluation. Methods including DNA-DNA hybridization, DNA sequencing followed by phylogenetic analysis of housekeeping genes and attempted PCR amplification of Salmonella specific genes all found this species, while likely new, is more closely related to the genus Escherichia. The WHO collaborating center for Salmonella also has evidence demonstrating that this new species is not likely Salmonella. http://www.pasteur.fr/sante/clre/cadrecnr/salmoms/WKLM_2007.pdf The initial report on this new species relied heavily on 16s rRNA sequencing which has been shown to be unreliable in the genus Enterobacteriaceae (2, 3). In that regard, the reported 16S similarity was within 0.1% for two different genera; their 16S sequence was 96.4% similar to S. bongori and 96.3% similar to Enterobacter cloacae. The phenotypic profile for the strain differed from Salmonella in three characteristics that are key for Salmonella identification, hydrogen sulfide production on TSI, indole production, and lysine utilization (1).
