Description

One of several voles with very small ranges, Gray-tailed Voles live only in lower-elevation grasslands. They do well in agricultural areas. They are excellent swimmers and can often escape flooding that way. Their population density fluctuates quite a lot for reasons that are unknown. In captivity, male Gray-tailed Voles provide parental care, a behavior that is rare among rodents in the genus Microtus.
