Description of Tetramicra

Monomorphic, nuclear status uncertain; diplokarya were not described but nuclei sometimes appear paired but with membranes not closely appressed; merogony involves uninucleate cells or cylindrical plasmodia with at least 7 nuclei lying in host derived vacuoles; sporogony involves binucleate cells, with touching but non-appressed nuclei; nuclei separate and divide once, division occurs in Maltese cross formation to give four uninucleate sporoblasts on which the surface coat is completed; Spores, 4.8 x 2.0 µm, are ovoid and uninucleate, with the endospore only about twice as thick as the exospore; polaroplast occupies less than one third of the spore and is lamellar with the posterior lamellae more widely spaced than the anterior ones; polar tube is isofilar with 4 coils round a prominent posterior vacuole; space between polaroplast and posterior vacuole is occupied by the nucleus, and cytoplasm containing one or more large membrane-bound electron dense bodies of enigmatic function; the beaded appearance of the early sporont coat and the dense bodies in the spores are characteristic; infections are visible through the ventral wall as white patches; type species T. brevifilum Matthews and Matthews, 1980 in connective tissue throughout body musculature of turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (Pisces, Bothidae).
