Although a type specimen of this species from an unspecified locality on the Limpopo River was reported to exist in 1965 (Zur Strassen 1965), this has not been re-located, so a neotype was recently designated. This individual was collected near Sordwana (Sodwana) Bay on the northeast coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to the south of the Limpopo estuary. Based on the neotype, the range of this species is centred on the hot, moist, coastal region of southern Mozambique and the extreme northeast coast of South Africa (Forgie et al. 2005). Its known extent of occurrence ranges between 10,000 and 48,000 km2, excluding or including areas of unsuitable habitat.
