Description of Histionidae

Loricate jakobids, the lorica is constructed of organic materials and not easily visible with light microscopy; dorsal surface of trophic cells faces the base of the lorica; ventral groove extending the length of the cell; a prominent cytoplasmic lip defining the right side of the ventral groove. Asexual reproduction by binary fission; cyst spherical, plugged, retained in parent lorica, wall unmineralized, apparently formed asexually from a single cell; sexual reproduction unknown. From freshwater habitats.
