Description of Blastocrithidia

Kinetoplastid flagellates, monogenetic; characteristic epimastigote form in nectomonad and haptomonad phases; amastigotes may be produced as flagellar cysts (as in Leptomonas) in some species; parasites of Diptera, Hemiptera, Siphonaptera, possibly Hymenoptera, and ixodid ticks, usually in the gut, occasionally in the salivary glands; transovarian transmission of some Blastocrithidia spp. flagellates, has been reported, as well as contaminative transmission by coprophagy; type species Blastocrithidia gerridis Patton
