Description of Ichthyobodo

Kinetoplastid flagellates, ectoparasitic flagellates on fishes, polykinetoplastic with several prominent kinetoplasts dispersed within the reticular mitochondrion; attached to epithelial cells by a hypertophied proboscis derived from the rostrum and adjacent flagellar pocket wall, host cell cytoplasm is ingested through the terminal cytostome, free-swimming dispersive phase lacks the hypertrophied proboscis.
