Description of Noctiluciphyceae

Dinoflagellates, with mutliple cell forms but including cells with a large free living buoyant motile cell inflated by vacuoles; haploid and diploid generations, dinokaryon evident during part of the life cycle; flagellar activity restricted to the Kofoidiniaceae; contractile fibrils produce movements in some; phagotrophic and a tentacle may be used in feeding; all forms may divide by binary fission; may occasionally produce up to 1,000 gymnodinoid gametes with typical dinoflagellate nuclei.
