Description of Plagiopylea

Intramacronucleate ciliates, somatic monokinetid with divergent postciliary ribbon, well-developed anterior-directed kinetodesmal fibril originating from triplets 6-7, and transverse ribbon arising from dense material near triplets 2, 3, extending laterally in Trimyemidae and anteriorly at least in Plagiopylidae; cytostome almost encircled by one or two files of dikinetids; common in anaerobic habitats.
